Tips for Creating Sustainable Hair Habits
Are you struggling to balance hair care with caring for the planet? Maybe you’re already in research mode (and that’s how you came across this post) or maybe you’ve never even considered it… either way, this is something I’m passionate about!
As a hairstylist I use a TON of products daily. So it truly matters to me that the products I use, and recommend, are as healthy for the planet as they are for your hair. That’s why I’m such a huge fan of Davines. The Davines motto is: “To do our best for the world, creating good life for all, through beauty, ethics, and sustainability.”
But products aren’t the only way you can make a difference. No matter what you’re using on or in your hair, you can add these 4 tips to your daily routine to start making a difference!
Tips for making your everyday hair care routine more sustainable:
1. Opt for a cooler water temperature. This doesn’t necessarily mean ice cold! (Although there are certainly benefits to that too.) But consider turning your water down to warm vs boiling hot.
Warm water helps open hair cuticles and the pores on your scalp, which more efficiently washes away all the dirt, sweat, oil and build-up. It also allows moisture in, making your hair shiny and soft… But water that is too hot can cause harm to your scalp by rinsing away the protective layer and natural oils. Hot water can also damage your roots and dry out your scalp, causing it to become dry, brittle and itchy. So keep an eye on the temp, because lukewarm water is the sweet spot for hair care.
2. Shut off the water while you massage in the shampoo, or allow a hair treatment to soak in.
This one is a little more straightforward. Less water down your drain = less dirty water that has to be cleaned by our sanitation system = less energy usage = happy Earth! It’s easy to implement too. Just switch the water off while you shampoo your hair or shave your legs.
3. Let your hair air dry! Not only does air drying save energy, it’s much better for your hair health! If you do need to use the hairdryer, keep it at the lowest possible temperature.
4. Remember to unplug styling tools after use. A plugged in tool uses power even when it is turned off! This might be the easiest tip of all. Just unplug any heat tools after using them. Add bonus: You won’t get to work and think “Oh no! Did I remember to turn off my curling iron?”
What else do you do to make your hair care routine more sustainable? Remember, the little steps add up. Try adding one of these tips at a time and pretty soon you’ll be saving the planet and looking your best!
